Your Instructional Design Portfolio Matters

Hey there, aspiring instructional designers, we’re diving into the exciting world of the instructional design portfolio. So, if you’ve been wondering what an instructional design portfolio is, why you need one, and what you should include in it, stay tuned for this latest episode of AcceleratedID.

What is an Instructional Design Portfolio?

If you’re serious about breaking into instructional design, you absolutely need an Instructional Design Portfolio. Trust me. This is non-negotiable for instructional design jobs.

Think of your portfolio as a dazzling storefront that entices prospective employers to step inside and explore what you have to offer. Just like when you stroll through the mall, people peek through the windows to decide if they want to go in or not, right? Your portfolio works the same way. Employers land on your portfolio, take a quick glance and make snap judgments. So you’d want your storefront to be irresistibly designed and showcase all the goodies.

Now, you might be wondering, what the heck is an instructional design portfolio? It’s simply a collection of your best work that demonstrates your skills, knowledge, and a glimpse of your awesome personality. It’s where you store the projects you’ve worked on, whether they’re personal endeavors or ones you have permission to share.

For example, let’s say a prospective employer asks, “Hey, can you show me a sample of a project you’ve done in PowerPoint?” And you effortlessly share a link to your portfolio where they can find that PowerPoint sample and explore all your other best projects that showcase your skills.

Why is an Instructional Design Portfolio Important?

First and foremost, your instructional design portfolio is a fantastic tool to showcase your skills and experience as an instructional designer. It helps you stand out from the crowd of equally qualified candidates. Picture this scenario: an employer has three amazing resumes in front of them, and they’re torn between all of them. What do they do? They ask for portfolios. And that’s when you have a chance to shine! Your portfolio becomes your secret weapon, capturing their attention and making them go, “Wow, this person is the real deal!”

But here’s the juicy part: your portfolio also helps you build relationships. It sounds strange since it’s not a face-to-face interaction but think about it. When you visit a website, you immediately get a vibe, right? It’s the same with your portfolio. Employers get a sense of who you are through the design, the colors, the fonts, and the snippets of your personality. It’s like an appetizer that leaves them wanting more. By infusing your portfolio with a dash of your awesomeness, you’re already building a connection before you even meet them.

Use your Instructional Design Portfolio to Land a Job

Your instructional design portfolio has the most benefit when you’re job hunting. It’s not just a fancy display case; it’s your golden ticket to opportunities. More about applying for instructional design jobs here

Having a well-curated portfolio can do the following:

  • Demonstrate your Skills and Experience

Your portfolio is like a visual resume. Employers get to see your work firsthand, and that speaks volumes. It’s one thing to say you’re a fantastic instructional designer, but it’s a whole different ball game when you can show them the incredible projects you’ve crafted.

  • Stand out from the Competition

When employers have multiple qualified candidates, they need something extra to help them make a decision. And that’s when your beautifully curated collection of projects will help you stand out. So make sure to add all the right ingredients and sprinkle in some of your sparkling personality.

  • Get your Foot in the Door

Entry-level instructional design, just like most fields, can be hard to break into. Sometimes, employers prefer candidates with more experience (even when the job is labeled entry-level, I know, how annoying!). But guess what? Your portfolio can bridge that gap. If an employer can see your exceptional work, they may no longer care if you’re a newbie. Your portfolio can level the playing field!

What to Include in your Portfolio

Now that we’ve covered why your instructional design portfolio is an absolute must-have, let’s dive into the nitty-gritty of what you should include.

Here are the top qualities you should consider when choosing (or creating) portfolio pieces:

First things first, choose projects that are relevant to the type of instructional design job you want.

  • If you’re eyeing a higher ed position, showcase projects tailored for tools like Canvas or Blackboard.
  • For corporate gigs, focus on engaging scripts, training needs analysis, or impactful slide decks.
  • And if you’re all about e-learning, make sure to include projects using tools like Articulate Storyline or Adobe Captivate.

Not sure what kind of instructional design job you want? Check out this helpful guide!

Include projects in different formats and mediums to demonstrate your versatility. That means videos, presentations, facilitator guides, participant workbooks, and more. Show potential employers you can handle it all like a boss!

Now, let’s talk about the secret sauce that makes your portfolio pop. Don’t be shy; let your personality shine through! Include a personal statement that gives employers a taste of who you are, what drives you, and why you’re passionate about instructional design.

Add a photo and sprinkle in tidbits about your hobbies, values, and accomplishments. This personal touch makes you more relatable and memorable.

Keep your portfolio polished and error-free. Check your grammar, spelling, and links. Speaking of links, make them sleek and clickable. Trust me, employers appreciate the clean look and seamless navigation.

Enlist the help of a trusted friend to review everything for you. It can be easy to miss mistakes when you’ve been looking at something for long enough!

Where to Host your Instructional Design Portfolio

There are plenty of portfolio site options out there. Here are a few of my favorites.

Free Options

If you’re not interested in spending extra money for a platform to build and host your portfolio, there are many choices.

Instructional designers who are aiming for a corporate or higher ed job typically go for a free site.

Platforms like Google Sites, Wix, or WordPress offer user-friendly templates to help you create a stunning portfolio.

Paid Options

Some of you might want to go the extra mile when it comes to hosting and customizing a website. If that sounds like you, you may want to look into a subscription-based portfolio platform.

Instructional designers who want to go the freelance route might want to invest in this kind of option to wow clients.

Consider options like Adobe Portfolio, Canva, Behance, or Squarespace. These sites offer additional features and customization options to help you attract clients longterm.

Wrapping it Up

Remember, your Instructional Design Portfolio is your ticket to success in the industry. It’s your chance to showcase your skills, stand out from the crowd, and make a lasting impression. So put your heart and soul into curating a portfolio that’s as unique and extraordinary as you are.

Shola Richards

Working with Shanwtay and Katie at the Instructional Design Company was a dream come true. Their creativity, expertise, and professionalism throughout the entire process was beyond top notch. I engaged them to help turn my first book into a training course, and I could not be happier with how the final product turned out. If you have an instructional design project and you’re considering which company to work with, you can stop your search and thank me later. They are truly the best in the business.

Graphic Designer

I joined the Instructional Design & Tech Accelerator Certificate Program because I struggled to find jobs in instructional design beyond the development phase. I’ve done a couple of training programs with lots of random projects, but I was overwhelmed, not connecting the dots, and not good at structuring my writing to hit learning objectives. I was looking for motivation and direction at beginning a better Instructional Designer.

After taking the Instructional Design & Tech Certificate program and joining my fantastic team for support, I found the structure and approach to be what I need to take my next steps, evening improving my skills in the development stage.

Teacher, Future Instructional Designer

I love how this course let’s you work at your own pace. I got great tips and learned many things. The ongoing support for multiple people and groups is what I love the best. You are never alone in this process. I have been able to adjust my resume and began creating a portfolio of work I’ve completed to add when applying for jobs. I use many of the PowerPoint skills in my lessons and trainings. I would highly recommend this for anyone wanting to become an instructional designer.

Laurie Henderson

Teacher, Future Instructional Designer

I have searched for the last few years to find some suitable career change where I wouldn’t have to earn another degree and where I could use the talents and skills I already have as a teacher. When I came across the Instructional Design Accelerator course, I loved the fact that Shawntay was a former teacher and could relate to a teacher’s need to transition from the classroom. This was what sold the course for me. Her experiences are invaluable especially when translating teacher duties to instructional designer duties. I would (and have) recommended this program to other teachers I know who are looking to transition out of the classroom. I do appreciate ALL of her feedback on my projects!

Wendy McMillian

L&D Project Manager

The Instructional Design & Tech Accelerator certificate program is one of the most comprehensive ID programs out there for beginners. If you’re looking to grow your schools in ID and development then I highly recommend this program. Not only will this program give you an overview of theory, but you will receive a thorough walkthrough of how to apply what you have learned. Although I had already secured a position in Learning & Development when I bought this course, it helped me to move up into a new position as a Learning & Development Project Manager!

Future Instructional Designer

I am really enjoying this program! It’s prerfect for someone who is thinking about a career shift to Instructional Design and does not have a lot of experience. This is my first real introduction to Instructional Design and it’s been the perfect beginner course to help me get my feet wet. The modules are broken down well and it’s great to go at your own pace and at your own time. The modules themselves are very comprehensive and you learn a lot from all of them. I really like how each one build upon each other and you’re working towards the bigger project of designing your first training course from scratch. I’m learning so much from going through this course! I was provided great feedback from Katie and Shawntay through the process via Trello Boards, comments on the Google documents, and Facebook group. This course has been well worth the time and effort and I appreciate the fact that I will always have the resources available to me after I complete the training (just in case I’m not quite ready to transition yet).

Future Instructional Designer

I can’t say enough great things about the Instructional Design & Tech Accelerator Certificate Program! The length of the program is perfect; it doesn’t feel rushed and there’s just the right amount of structure to give you the accountability you need. There are so many opportunities to get live answers to any questions you have related to the course content or anything ID-related! This program gave me the support and structure I needed to both feel affirmed in the relevant skills I already had coming in and to fill in the gaps I had as a career-changer going into ID. Shawntay, Katie, and all the coaches are super helpful and supportive. I now feel confident that I have the tools and access to resources I need to apply for ID jobs without wondering if there’s something I’m “missing” in the preparation process. I’d highly recommend this program to anyone wanting to transition into ID or who just wants to brush up on their skills in the field.

Freelance Instructional Designer

I’d highly recommend the Instructional Design & Tech Accelerator Certificate Program. I’m blown away by how much I learned in just 12 weeks. I had ID experience prior to taking this course and was just looking to get a better understanding of applying adult learning principles. This course well exceeded my expectations! Not only did I gain a clear understanding of adult learning principles, I was also able to apply those principles by creating assets for your portfolio using PowerPoint, Adobe Premiere Pro and Storyline. The hands on support that we received was top notch.

Instructional Designer

This program is one of the most robust yet fulfilling L&D programs I’ve seen. I learned so much about the industry and about the limitlessness of my own capabilities. I am so appreciative of Shawntay and all of the trainers who took part in the program. They went above and beyond with not only guiding, but communicating live and working one on one or in small groups. If you are on the fence, I say take the leap and you will not regret it! There’s so much to learn, not only from the trainers, but also the learners in your group. Everyone comes in with their own skills and can be additional support and guidance for you. Thank you for creating this program!

Freelance Instructional Designer

My teacher-to-instructional-designer journey began two years ago when I left my teaching comfort zone and started my first freelance ID job. Now, I’m stepping out of the classroom and taking my freelance work full-time, so I’m thrilled to be joining the Tech Accelerator program. Adding technologies like Articulate 360 and Adobe Premiere Pro to my qualifications will help me take my courses to the next level and attract more clients!

Teacher Transitioning into Instructional Design

I am genuinely grateful for this course. I wanted a real-world perspective and feel like I got it. I’m teaching now, but nearing retirement age but can see myself working as an instructional designer well into my retirement years. My other goal is to take as many courses in statistics as possible in hopes of bringing some mathematical precision to the ROI question. Like you say, getting accurate metrics to measure ROI can be a challenge, but I intend to work on that part. That’s unimportant right now, what is important is the fact that I feel like this course was well worth every penny I spent and I would to it again in a heartbeat. I have too much going on right now, but as soon as I get some time freed up I intend to take your course in project management.
